VOLKSWAGEN’S Spanish subsidiary, SEAT, has officially unveiled its first SUV model — the Ateca.
The urban SUV’s styling appears to be a combination of the Leon’s DNA and the all-new Tiguan’s body, measuring 4.36 metres, making it about the size of a Nissan Qashqai.
The Ateca offers short overhangs and skirts that are rounded off at the bottom. The 2.64-meter wheelbase is identical to that of the Leon. The cargo area boasts an impressive size of 510 litres in standard form or 485 litres when AWD is fitted.
Full LED headlights (optional) dominate the front while the back features a mixture of interlocking surfaces and the trunk opening is a large one.
Barcelona-based Seat has opted to offer the best VW technologies at an affordable price but no shortcuts appear to have been taken.
Front-wheel or all-wheel-drive models offer manual or dual-clutch DSG transmissions.
The extensive array of technology options extends from full-LED headlights through a broad portfolio of assistance systems, including some of the very latest Group technology, such as Traffic Jam Assist and Emergency Assist, right through to a package of high-end infotainment systems with eight-inch touchscreens and Full Link connectivity.
Three trim levels will offer colours and top-quality materials to suit every taste, with the top-of-the-range being the Ateca XCELLENCE.
The interior is typically dark. Behind the gear stick, a knob controls how the vehicle behaves in off-road conditions.
Being based on the MQB platform, the Ateca’s engine range comprises two TSI petrol and three TDI diesel engines.
The entry-level FWD models get either a 1.0 TSI or a 1.6 TDI, both with 115 PS. Above those are two different 147hp engines, namely the 1.4 TSI ACT (cuts fuel to two cylinders under light loads) and the much bigger 2.0 TDI.
The most powerful engine available on the Ateca will be the 2.0 TDI rated at 180hp.
“The SEAT Ateca is perfect for an urban lifestyle. It possesses stunning design and dynamics, and boasts compelling quality and utility. But above all, the Ateca exudes unmistakable character,” its president Luca de Meo said.
“Our first SUV marks the start of a new era for SEAT. The Ateca is a clear development of the Leon DNA and will drive forward the success of the range. SEAT is a brand on the move.”
