BMW Group Malaysia used the prestigious BMW Malaysia Open 2016 tennis tournament to launch the highly-anticipated successor to the limited run and critically-acclaimed BMW 1M Coupe, the BMW M2 Coupé on March 2.
Introducing the new performance coupé from BMW, Mr. Raymond Tan, Head of Sales, BMW Group Malaysia said, “The New BMW M2 Coupé is a very special car. There are only very limited numbers of this car produced worldwide and we are very lucky to be able to have units for Malaysia in celebration of the 100 Years Anniversary of the BMW Group.
“The New BMW M2 Coupé will once again reinforce the fact that premium performance and dynamic vehicles in Malaysia can only be measured by one letter – M – the Most Powerful Letter in the World!”
Under the hood sits a 3.0-litre six-cylinder M TwinPower Turbo engine while aluminium M Sport suspension, seven-speed M double-clutch transmission (M DCT) with integrated Launch Control, Active M differential, M Servotronic steering, M exhaust system with electronic flap control and M compound brakes set it apart and above the BMW M235i.
The M2 Coupe delivers 370hp and 465Nm of torque – a temporary 500Nm is available on overboost – for a 0-100km/h time of 4.3 seconds yet returns fuel consumption of just 7.9L/100km and emits 185g/km of carbon dioxide thanks to BMW’s EfficientDynamics package.
Dynamic Experience Control modes are Comfort, Sport and Sport+ and the Dynamic Stability Control’s M Dynamic Mode allows wheel slip for controlled oversteer. The M DCT however packs Stability Clutch Control which disengages the clutch to stabilise the vehicle when necessary to prevent oversteer; a Smokey Burnout feature conversely allows rear wheel spin while moving at low speeds for tyre-shredding drama.
Externally, the M2 carries an M car-specific kidney grille design while flared wheel arches – over M double-spoke 19-inch forged aluminium wheels – and a sporty bodykit make for a distant and purposeful appearance, the latter also improving aerodynamics and cooling capability.
As per usual on M cars, quad tailpipes peek out back finished in high-gloss chrome.
In the cabin, driver and front passenger enjoy leather sport seats with adjustable side bolsters, an M sports steering wheel and an M gearshift lever. Alcantara trim and open-pored carbon surfaces are scattered throughout as are M logos.
On the infotainment front, BMW ConnectedDrive is packaged with a GoPro app which allows the driver to record fast laps of the track with a dashboard-mounted action camera, using the iDrive Controller and Control Display while the M Laptimer app where information on speeds and braking points is available can be shared easily via e-mail or Facebook.
A SIM card built into the vehicle enables customers to enjoy smartphone-less connectivity; the Concierge Service for example makes it possible to select points of interest while driving, such as restaurants or hotels, make a reservation if desired, and have them sent straight to the vehicle as a navigation destination.
The SIM card can additionally carry out Intelligent Emergency Call if the airbags are triggered in an accident, automatically transmitting the severity of the accident, the potential risk of injury to the occupants and the vehicle’s location to the BMW Call Centre.
This information is then used to arrange the best possible emergency response while the Call Centre stays in contact with the occupants, the manual emergency call function also allows rapid help to be summoned for other road users in emergency situations.
The retail price on the road, without insurance with BMW Group Malaysia’s latest 5 Years Unlimited Mileage Warranty, Free Scheduled Service Program and BMW Tyre Warranty Programme for the New BMW M2 Coupé is RM 498,800.00, available for the moment only in Long Beach Blue Metallic.
