Malaysia has never seen these three letter together on a Merc before and here it is finally, the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLC available at launch in lone 250 4Matic all-wheel drive spec in AMG Line trim which includes a bodykit package and 20-inch multi-spoke rims.
An SUV that fits the bill to perfection so claims Mercedes-Benz, the new GLC is a C-Class based urban SUV also engineered for minor off-road duties.
An optional Off-Road Engineering package however will add five different programs for proper go-anywhere ability, including slippery surfaces.
Even without this, the GLC packs standard Dynamic Select driving modes including Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual, the last of which allows a driver to mix and match steering, engine and air-conditioning parameters according to their liking.
One nifty convenience feature is the Handsfree Access for the tailgate which allows it be opened via a swiping motion under the rear bumper provided the key is in range.
The cabin is all C-Class of course, with the large one-piece centre console and the circular air vents alongside the tablet-esque media display perched atop the dashboard. Finished in nappa leather and open-pore wood trim, the GLC comes standard with a panoramic sliding sunroof.
Compared to the GLC’s predecessor the GLK — an LHD-only model not available here — there is much improvement in interior volume, increasing the load capacity behind the second row by up to 110 litres for a total of 580 litres.
With the second row folded down with a 40/20/40 split, it is able to transport up to 1600 litres, an increase of 50 litres. Luggage compartment length and width is 1320mm and 1100mm respectively. A claimed 34mm more foot space increases ease of entry and exit.
In safety features the GLC is well-equipped, a seven-airbag package includes the usual driver and front passenger airbags, pelvis/thorax sidebags for the same, front to back windowbags and a driver’s knee airbag is standard alongside LED Intelligent Light System, Collision Prevention Assist Plus, Crosswind Assist, Headlamp Assist and Attention Assist.
The Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus allows main beam to be left on permanently by masking out the area of the main-beam light cone which is occupied by other vehicles. The GLC also packs a 360° camera and Active Parking Assist, which manoeuvres the vehicle autonomously into detected parallel and end-on parking spaces.
The 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo in the GLC is connected to 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic — the first time this transmission is available in a local Merc — putting power to the ground through 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive with a basic front/rear torque split of 33/67 percent. The GLC 250 comes with stiffer sports suspension, the Off-road Engineering Package provides a softer setup.
“The new GLC represents a further, systematic step in the implementation of our successful SUV philosophy. Designed for the keen adventurer, the GLC is your best companion. Regardless of where you may roam, you can count on the GLC being ready for adventure at the push of a button.
This premium mid-sized SUV is capable of meeting all your lifestyle demands – whether for a road trip with your family, a sporty adventure with your friends, or even on a relaxing drive in and around the city,” says Mark Raine, Vice President Sales & Marketing Passenger Cars, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia.
The GLC — RM328,888 OTR including GST without insurance — in particular was hinted by Mercedes-Benz Malaysia president and CEO Dr Claus Weidner to be “strongly considered for local production if the demand is strong” which we believe will occur sometime in the second half of the year.
