Kawasaki Malaysia kicks off CNY Road Safety Awareness campaign 2016

Kawasaki Malaysia Sdn Bhd (KMSB) and the Malaysian Motorcycle & Scooter Dealer Association (MMSDA) kicked off their joint Central Region 2016 Road Safety Awareness Campaign with a complimentary 16 point check for all motorcyclists passing through the Sungai Besi South Bound Toll house on Thursday, 28 Jan.

The campaign was officiated by Minister of Transport, Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai along with Chairman of KMSB, YM Raja Dato’ Hanipuddin Bin Raja’ Nong Chik, General Manager and Director of KMSB Datuk Jeffrey Lim, Chairman of Malaysian Motorcycle & Scooter Dealers Association (MMSDA) Mr.Wee Hong,Executive Director of AEON Credit Service Malaysia Mr.Kenji Fujita and Director of KHI Helmets Mr.Lee Swee Chang.

In his speech, Datuk Seri Liow thanked KMSB, MMSDA, AEON Credit, KHI Helmets, Tokio Marine Insurance, Bridgestone Tyres, the Highway Authorities, PLUS and the Police for working together to encourage road safety awareness, especially during the festive holidays which see the highest number of vehicles on the road.

He also highlighted the fact that the number of road accidents recorded in 2015 which totalled 489,606 saw an increase of around 13,000 cases year on year compared to 2014., making Malaysia the third highest road death in the ASEAN region.

Of these, a total of 6706 were road deaths recorded in 2015. Statistics also shows that records from the past 10 years show a total of 39,744 deaths in total were motorcyclists including pillion riders.

With these numbers, the group that is most vulnerable on the road remains motorcyclists and their pillion riders, and the government encourages both public and private corporations to do their part in helping educate them.

One initiative by the government is to introduce MyLesen, a program that is aimed at educating motorcyclists through a road safety education module introduced to the young to encourage them to ride and drive responsibly by first registering and taking their driving license.

The campaign will next feature in Malacca, along Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho on February 4th 2016.
