GREAT news to fans of Aprilia motorcycles – you can own one of its popular models at a much lower price than previously. The model in question is none other than the Aprilia Shiver 750, where a CBU (Completely Built-Up) version would cost a buyer more than RM56,000 OTR. But now the local Aprilia fans can buy a CKD (Completely Knocked Down) type at a less shivering price of RM43,888.
The Shiver 750 will be the first Aprilia model to be assembled outside of Italy, and Malaysia has been chosen as the country to undertake the project, thanks to the cooperation between the Piaggio Group and Naza Premira Sdn Bhd, the sole distributor of Aprilia bikes in the country.
The Aprilia Shiver 750 CKD was launched by Naza Premira this morning, as well as the announcement that it would soon begin local assembly of the motorcycle at Naza’s manufacturing facility in Shah Alam from early 2015. The assembly of the Aprilia Shiver 750 bike will be carried out by Naza Bikes Sdn Bhd whilst the distribution will be managed by Naza Premira.
While Malaysia will be the first country to assemble the Shiver 750 outside of Italy, the production is exclusively for the Malaysian market at this point in time. There are no plans to increase nor export the CKD version to other markets in this region for now.
To date, Naza Premira has been importing CBU units of Aprilia motorcycles from the brand’s final assembly plant in Italy. At the start of 2015, Naza will begin assembly operations for the Shiver 750 CKD edition while other models in Aprilia’s line-up will continue to be imported as CBU units for now.
A total of RM5 million is being invested in the development of the Shiver 750 CKD assembly operations and a further RM1 million is being devoted to parts inventory. Naza Premira is expecting to sell between 500 and 600 units of the Aprilia Shiver 750 CKD per year. With the upgrade to the assembly plant, it is able to have a production capacity of up to 1,200 units per year to cope with any increase in demand for the Shiver.
“We are proud and greatly honoured to be the first and only company chosen to begin CKD assembly for Aprilia outside Italy and hope to become the centrum for export around the ASEAN region in the coming months. This is a momentous occasion for us and proves our commitment to successfully representing this global brand. It is also a mark of the effort we make towards developing high performance motorcycle manufacturing and assembly operations, whilst simultaneously training local Malaysians and promoting foreign direct investment” said Datuk Wira Haji SM Faisal Tan Sri SM Nasimuddin, Group Executive Chairman & Group CEO, Naza World Group.
Simone Niccolai, Managing Director of Piaggio Asia Pacific Ltd., said, “The initiative announced today is an important new step in the Piaggio Group strategy to continue expanding its operations in Asia and in the ASEAN area in particular, where we are already successful players with the Vespa and Piaggio scooters. As we prepare for greater growth throughout ASEAN with the introduction of the Group’s motorcycles, we are looking at setting up a regional hub for the Aprilia brand in Malaysia. In doing so, we are working closely with NAZA and the Malaysian government. Proper training on the procedures of assembling the Shiver 750 has been conducted to ensure the high quality is maintained and mirrors that of the CBU models assembled in our Italy plant.”
A naked medium-powered sports bike with a distinct personality, the Aprilia Shiver 750 first wowed the motorcycle world when the first version was introduced in 2007 with its revolutionary technology – it was in fact the first bike ever to be equipped with the Ride by Wire electronic throttle. This technology, still unmatched by the direct competition, complements the excellent standard of equipment that makes the Shiver “best in class”.
Continuous evolution over time means that the 2015 model now boasts a second generation Ride by Wire with improved ergonomics, with new handlebars and a tapered saddle and a subtle facelift. The Shiver, which is available in red and black, also features a sporty riding position with racing style rider and passenger foot pegs.
The Shiver features a 90° V-twin mounted on a modular trellis aluminium frame with significant torsional rigidity and an advanced electronic management. Thanks to its impressive technical solutions, the V90 Aprilia engine is able to achieve outstanding output values. It has a maximum output of 95 HP at 9,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 81 Nm at 7,000 rpm.
Its Ride-by-Wire electronic throttle control has three selectable responses – Touring, Sport and Rain. Other notable features include radial-mount callipers and new 320mm wave front brake discs, inverted 43mm forks with stanchions, where its 120-mm travel allows the rider to easily cope with city roads and mountain paths.
