The first day of the International Rainforest Challenge 2012 was full of 4x4 action with six Special Stages (SS) held at the beach front of Pantai Klebang.
The top 10 positions after the Prologue stage SS had the Russian teams 103 & 104 (with 507 & 506 pts) in lead position with Australian Team Exedy 139 (506 pts).
The Venezuelan Team Azimut 157 (492pts), Kuala Lumpur Team ACKL 155 (485pts and defending champions Mervin Lim and Hamizan Hamid of Team 129 (465pts).
With heavy rain and rising river level, day three of the event is bound to see positions change as another 16 SS are fought out along jungle tracks in Kg. Sungai Mering and Hutan Rizab Bukit Senggah in the Jasin district.
“The jungle sector in Melaka is not as long as the ones in previous RFC events held in Terengganu and Johor, and our concentration this year is more on the technical hardcore special stages. However, competitors should not discount the Terminator and Twilight Zone sectors which may end up even tougher than the previous years,” said RFC founder Luis J.A.Wee.
The 15th anniversary celebration of the country’s premier offroad challenge was flagged off on 2 December at the Dataran Memorial next to Fort A Famosa in the heart of the historic city.
Meanwhile, the largest gathering of 972 4X4s gathered at Pantai Klebang in Melaka during the Prologue stages of the International Rainforest Challenge made it to the Malaysia Book of Records.
T-shirts & certificates of participation were given as each of the 4x4s drove out of the parking bay.
