New Entry Level Variant for the Perodua Alza

Perodua has introduced two additional variants to the ever popular Alza compact MPV, the SR automatic and manual. SR is short for smart ride. Priced at RM53,013.50 for the manual and RM56,513.50 for the automatic (Peninsular Malaysia), the SR is an entry level model positioned below the 1.5 GL manual (RM 55,503) and 1.5 EZ automatic (RM 58,503), previously the cheapest Alza variant.

With the approximate RM 2,000 reduction in price, features dropped / downgraded are :

  • Rear wiper deletion
  • Hand operated parking brake for automatic variant as well (automatic EZ variant is foot operated)
  • A more conventional separated seats (automatic EZ variant is bench type)
  • 2-speaker audio (4-speaker in GL and EZ variants)
  • Manual operated door mirrors
  • UV-cut glass for windscreen only (versus all windows and windscreens in higher grades)

On top of that, colour options are limited to only 3 - Glittering Silver, Ivory White and a new colour, Mystical Purple (also available in other Alza variants). The higher grade variants has 6 colour options, including Pearl White, Ebony Black, Medallion Grey.

Other than that, specifications are similar to the GL and EZ variants, meaning deletion of front fog lamps, driver and passenger front airbags, anti-lock brakes, rear spoiler, seat height adjuster, steering wheel audio control switches. All these items are available in the higher grade SXi, EZi, and Advanced variants.

As I was writing this, I realized that 'SR' is just one transpose step away from 'RS.' Imagine an Alza RS instead of Alza SR. Mmmm...Alza Lite RS.

Porsche deletes specs from its vehicles and charges you double the price for a car with less kit that tortures your spine, gives it a bespoke colour and stickers, christened it as the GT3 RS, puts it out on the market and the entire year's allocation will be sold out in no time. Of course, we are not making any direct comparisons between products from Rawang and Zuffenhausen.

  • It was reported that the Alza SR variant will make it even more affordable for Malaysian consumers looking to upgrade to a more spacious vehicle (as in you pay the Myvi High Spec price but get the bigger sized Alza) and is tragetted at consumers who do not mind having less features. The features that got removed were fog lamps, airbags, ABS, EBD and BA are unavailable.

Perodua's MD Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh was quoted "However, it does not mean we have compromised on the safety and the aesthetics of the Alza SR”.

But I can't see how the safety is not compromised when Airbags, ABS, EBD, BA are removed. Moreover, I thought there was a proposal where airbags are now a must in new vehicles by 1 Jan 2012?

    • Profile

You brought up a very good point. Most probably Perodua went around the ruling by homologating the vehicle before the enforcement starting date of 1-Jan.

Before any new car is sold, it has to go through what is called a VTA - vehicle type approval by JPJ, homologating the vehicle against all applicable regulations. Legal enforcement is levied based on the date the vehicle got its VTA certification, and not the market launch date.

Either that or the manufacturer requested / lobbied for exemption, which is possible on a case by case basis.

      • I see, a very detailed explanation you got there Hans :) I think what Perodua's MD meant about safety is not compromised is because the standard Alza does not have airbags and ABS, only premium Alza has those extra features. So he was comparing the Alza SR and standard Alza's safety equipments.

  • Proton says we will get EVs next year wo. We will watch and see la.

Perodua? Aminar Rashid once said hybrids are expensive not necessary for Perodua's segment. Which we can translate as "we are quite happy ripping Malaysians off and having the market protected for us, why would you think we will be interested in learning and working hard to develop tomorrow's technology?"

Even Tata and Chinese brands are starting to offer hybrids. Shameful.
