Audi : There is no alternative to the Euro

Audi Chairman Rupert Stadler

Viability of the Euro is now a hotly debated topic within Europe. There is a new informal economic acronym created - PIIGS, referring to the beleaguered economics of Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece and Spain. Germany alone is propping up the entire Eurozone and Chancellor Angela Merkel has firmly said that Germany can no longer afford to continue funding the EU. But without continued support from Europe's strongest economy, the Eurozone is in danger of collapse. For German car makers like Audi, continued support for the Euro is paramount in ensuring continuity of its business.

Speaking at the recent World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, Audi Chairman Rupert Stadler said  “From a global perspective, only a united Europe will be competitive in the long run.” At the WEF, representatives from business, politics and science are meeting for the 42nd time in the Swiss winter resort of Davos to discuss a better future.

“The rescue of the euro is currently the decisive topic, not just for us Europeans, but for many regions with close economic ties to us,” emphasizes Stadler. The Audi chairman does not consider solving the crisis to be the responsibility of politics alone. What is needed now more than ever is responsible, future-oriented and sustainable business activity to bolster mutual trust within Europe and to consolidate the European national economies. “We need a strong European economic region if we are to be competitive from a global perspective. There is no alternative to the euro,” says Stadler.

Audi is also the exclusive transport partner for this year's WEF, as it has since 1987. This year, 86 Audi A8 L and 13 armored high-security Audi vehicles were provided for the shuttle service in Davos. Regulations in Davos dictate that only cars with CO2 emissions below 200 g/km are allowed to be driven inside. The Audi A8 L is rated at 171 g CO
