BMW Confirms X4 by 2014

Digital render of the X4 by German magazine Auto Bild

The X4, to be launched by 2014, will be the latest addition to join the growing BMW X family. BMW's Spartanburg plant South Carolina, USA, which currently manufactures the Z4, X5, X6, X3 not just for America but also for 130 export markets, will be expanded to accomodate the new model.

“We plan to invest over the next three years nearly USD 900 million in the Spartanburg plant by 2014. This will create 300 new jobs by the end of this year. This will allow us to produce 350,000 units in Spartanburg in the mid term,” says Frank-Peter Arndt, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Production.

Speaking at a ceremony to celebrate production of the two-millionth vehicle at the BMW plant in South Carolina since 1994, Arndt said “This is in response to rising global demand for our BMW X models and the expansion of the BMW X family to include the BMW X4.”

No further details were available from BMW regarding the X4 but according to German magazine Auto Bild, the X4 will be a 3-door cross between a coupe and SUV, much like the current X6 Frankenstein machine. We think Auto Bild's speculations are logical another 5-door SUV between an X3 and X5 will only cannibalize sales from the former.

Expect a tarmac burning M version, X4M to be introduced later in its model life.
